"At the DARLA Art Platform in New York (Booth A201), art critic, curator and philosopher Dr. Darla Migan affirmed the creation of young artist Andy Wei... She believes that her cross-cultural upbringing has profoundly influenced her artistic views - her mother is from Panama, her father is a French-speaking Beninese, and she grew up in the southern United States, making "Y'all" her language habit.
This background makes her more concerned about how art can transcend differences and create shared experiences. When showing the works of Chinese artist Andy Wei, Dr. Migan emphasized that art not only tells history, but also helps people find a sense of belonging. She mentioned that creators like Speed (video blogger) are narrowing the cultural gap between Asian and African diasporas, but real observation and thinking still need to be done in physical space. She hopes that more collectors will pay attention to young artists and support their growth... "
The Houston Rodeo Student Art Competition is an annual Texas tradition held to support young artists in the greater Houston area. Every year a quarter of a million emerging artists submit works and compete to place in the top 50 to advance to the live statewide auction.
Wei began competing in the Rodeo School Art Auction during his sophomore year of high school (2014) and placed ninth (9th) in his first year. That graphite work on paper was auctioned for $59,000 in March 2015. He entered the competition again in his junior year with a colored pencil piece which placed fifth (5th) overall and sold at auction for $50,000 in March 2016.
In 2017 Andy won first place and was crowned Grand Champion of the auction with his entry of an oil painting on canvas (completed when the artist was 18 years old).
The auction hammer landing at $235,000 broke world records at the time.
On winning, Wei says: “Seems to be a lifetime ago. The financial and tuition support was how I convinced my folks that I could attend art school instead of pursuing a path that offered more stability.”
